ACL Leader in Focus – Tarilyn Bartels

In your view, what’s the most important attribute of a leader?

The most important attribute of a leader for me is their attitude. I think that it is VERY important for the leader to set the tone and be the cheerleader for the group. A great leader has a positive attitude that is encouraging, inclusive, and corrects performance as needed in a supportive way. I think a team can feel when a leader truly wants the best for the team, and for each individual on that team to succeed.

How do you define civic leadership?

Civic leadership means getting involved in securing the health, wealth and well-being of the community, and helping solve the economic, social and political issues involved in fostering the development of a creative and vibrant community.

Why are you personally motivated to explore civic leadership?

I am personally motivated to explore civic leadership because it is a reasonably new and unexplored area of expertise for me. As a leader in my workplace, and someone who coaches and molds younger student employees, I think that this is an important area of leadership and example setting that is often overlooked, and I hope to deepen my ability to guide students into an era of civic responsibility.

What, in your view, is the most significant issue/opportunity facing our community? Why?

I believe that a very significant opportunity, working at an educational institution, is that I/we have a huge responsibility to fold civic leadership into all of our education to undergraduate and graduate students at Brock. I think this because, in order to truly have ‘educated’ a student, we have to provide a well-rounded education to create engaged citizens, not just someone who is ready to enter their career.
